Architectural Marvel: iGate, The Eurasia Tunnel

Dean Skira and Dino Krizmanic's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Turkish Talismans

The iGate is not just a tunnel access, but a complex steel structure consisting of 80 interlocking arches with different radii and inclination. Each arch spans 30m, covering four car lanes with a support span of 20m. This intricate design sets the iGate apart from other tunnel entrances, offering a light and transparent structure that doesn't obstruct the view of Istanbul's Historic Peninsula.

Skira and Krizmanic's design was developed following the creation of the architectural decorative lighting, which was also inspired by popular Turkish talismans. The main theme of the architectural concept is the arch, a historic building element that extends through the world and particularly through Turkish architectural history. The iGate is a testament to this history, integrating it into a modern and functional design.

The Eurasia Tunnel, where the iGate is located, is an integrated project connecting continents. It serves as a 'Fast', 'Economic', 'Safe', 'Comfortable' and 'Environment-friendly' transportation alternative for the Istanbul Strait crossing. The tunnel's route never spoils the skyline of Istanbul or the Historical Peninsula, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it an environment-friendly project that takes ecological balance into consideration and does not harm marine life.

The project started in February 2011 and the tunnel opened in December 2016. The entire process from the concept design to the shop drawings was controlled and developed through parametric design. This allowed for greater freedom in searching and selecting the interweaving structure in the conceptual design stage, and greater precision and control in the final phase of the project.

The iGate is a remarkable example of how design and technology can come together to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing structure. It is a testament to the talent and creativity of its designers, Dean Skira and Dino Krizmanic, and a worthy recipient of the Silver A' Design Award.
